History
The institution dates from 1946, when Triple Cities College opened in Endicott, N.Y., five mileswest of the present campus, as a branch of Syracuse University. When the college wasincorporated into the State University of New York four years later, it was renamed HarpurCollege in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who devoted his lateryears to settling the area around Binghamton.
Until 1953, Harpur College was one of only two public liberal arts colleges in the state. In 1961the campus was moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollments and areputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorategrantinguniversity centers in the state system. In 1965, the campus was formally designated theState University of New York at Binghamton.

Education Abroad Programs
Binghamton University encourages students to study abroad as valuable preparation for an increasingly interdependent world. Education-abroad programs provide opportunities to live and learn in societies around the globe during the semester, academic year, summer, and winter terms. Participants can earn academic credit in numerous disciplines that enable students to remain on track for graduation. In some cases, graduate credit may be earned through some programs.
Binghamton University currently administers over 50 education-abroad and exchange programs in various locations and sites - and new programs are constantly being developed. In addition, Binghamton students have access to nearly 1,000 education-abroad programs sponsored by SUNY institutions and can even look at programs outside the SUNY system. For more information, visit the Office of International Education and Global Initiatives (IEGI) website.
The SUNY tuition liability schedule and the campus policy for broad-based fee liability guide the education abroad withdrawal policy. Financial liability for education-abroad programs begins to accrue on the first day of classes on campus at Binghamton University for the term the student is studying abroad. Education-abroad program fees paid for by Binghamton University, on behalf of a student, before the education-abroad start date are the full financial responsibility of the student, regardless of when the student withdraws from the program.
NOTE: Students who have previously been convicted of a felony are advised that this may impede their ability to study abroad. Students who have concerns about such matters are advised to contact the Office of International Education and Global Initiatives.
Questions about all aspects of credit-bearing education-abroad programming should be directed to iegi@binghamton.edu.
